Social Marketing In Action!

Experiences from the Caribbean Social Marketing Programme (CARISMA)

The CARISMA Special Session sought to increase the awareness of all participants on the Role of CARISMA in meeting HIV prevention objectives through Social Marketing and how CARISMA best practices and lessons learned can be applied to national HIV/SRH programmes. Participants were exposed to various Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) techniques that can be used with hard-to-reach, hidden and stigmatised populations as well as witnessed the use of Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Blogging, You tube) to support HIV and SRH programmes with key at-risk populations.

CARISMA and PCI Media Impact forge alliances on Education-Entertainment

We are pleased to announce a new partnership between the CARISMA programme and PCI Media Impact to implement a Caribbean Mass Media Soap Opera Edutainment Project.

PCI Media Impact has over 25 years' Entertainment-Education experience globally and through this partnership, both entities have agreed to improve the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours to HIV among youth, across the existing 12 My Island countries, plus Barbados, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, and St Maarten.  The partnership will help to:

  • Strengthen the existing sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS story lines in the Callaloo radio drama series, find them on FaceBook for more information
  • Expand My Island to a 15 country programme
  • Result in working with existing and new partners to coordinate the integration of HIV and broader sexual and reproductive health themes into other existing radio and television programming in the Caribbean.

The partnership leverages existing, powerful Entertainment-Education platforms, infrastructure and networks; capitalises on an extensive investment in trainings, teams, and baseline and formative research as well as enables significant cost savings, economies of scale and potential to enhance impact of My Island-My Community and CARISMA. See recent World Bank video featuring the work of PCI Media Impact including their work in the Caribbean.

CARISMA welcomes PCI Media Impact and looks forward to more new and exciting education-entertainment initiatives in the Caribbean!
