PSI Eastern Caribbean, Price as a Barrier to Condom Use: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (2007)

This report describes the results of an experiment aimed at determining whether and how a condom price reduction in Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines would affect condom purchase and use and the overall condom market. A strong causal link is found between condom price, purchase and likely use. Price constitutes the single most important barrier to condom purchase in these two countries; reducing prices would have a greater impact on purchase than improving attitudes towards condoms. This study concludes that a reduced price could lead up to as much as a 7 percentage point increase in the population that purchases condoms, from 84 percent to 91 percent.
