Country Context

The Dominican Republic has an estimated population of 9.2 million and an area of 48,422 km² making it the second largest Caribbean nation after Cuba. 53 percent of the population is under the age of 25 and roughly 30 percent of the population lives below the national poverty line. Living conditions in the bateyes are particularly difficult, where the average worker earns less than US$0.25 each day.
